Both traditional lawns and those that are more wildlife friendly will benefit from some extra care and attention in early autumn to get them into good shape for next year.
Scarification
Removing thatch helps the lawn to cope with drought, as water is better able to get down into the soil. Thatch can also reduce air circulation between the grass plants, which can lead to fungal problems.
Aeration
Aerating a lawn improves the movement of air and water among the grass roots, helping the lawn to withstand periods of drought or waterlogging.
Top Dressing & Over-seeding
This will improve the soil’s texture and drainage, which should encourage better rooting and denser grass.
Lawn Treatment
herbicide treatment in April/May followed by a light slow release fertiliser a couple of weeks later can help revive tired lawns. Organic methods using liquid seaweed and sieved compost work just as well to feed and fertilise as their non-organic counterparts. Most grass growth is in response to light, rather than warmth or watering, so shade is the element that will compromise a lawn the most.
